2. Course Description and objectives
This class is designed for students who have successfully completed Mandarin 1001 & 1501 or equivalent. A good command of the Chinese phonetic pronunciation system (pinyin) as well as mastery of 400 Chinese characters is the prerequisites of this class. The class will continue to focus on training students in these four language skills--speaking, listening, reading, and writing with a gradually increasing emphasis on basic reading. The detailed class goals are discussed below.
Phonetics Although pinyin is no more a main focus of this class, continual attention will be paid to the correct use of the four tones in speaking and oral reading, as well as to assigning the correct tone graphs to each syllable.
Vocabulary Students are expected to learn about 300 new words and to analyze new characters in terms of their sound, shape, and meaning. In order to achieve more efficient vocabulary learning, students are required to take quizzes as well as to make word cards on a weekly basis. Failure to bring the vocabulary cards to the class will result in partial loss of class credit.
Speaking and listening In this class, students are expected to continue to learn common expressions that are used in basic daily conversation and use them in their own daily speaking. For the listening comprehension, students are required to complete a series of listening comprehension drills related to daily life activities. At the end of this course, students are expected to reach the proficiency levels of intermediate-mid in speaking and intermediate high in listening stated in the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines.
